New App Deadline for Computational and Systems Biology Institute (CSBSI), June 8 - August 1, 2008 (3/15/08 ts)
Computational and Systems Biology Summer Institute (CSBSI) at Iowa State University is jointly supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The purpose of this program is to provide undergraduate and graduate students majoring in sciences and engineering with an introduction to integrated biology and Systems Biology. No prior experience in these fields is required.

The ISU-CSBSI will award up to 12 studentships to CSBSI Fellows. To guarantee consideration, applications must be received by April 7, 2008.

Each studentship will cover a $4,000 stipend over the entire 8 weeks as well as costs of travel and living. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Undergraduate students must have completed their sophomore year and graduate students must be within the first two year of entry into their graduate education program.

Complete information, applications and brochures on this opportunity can be found here: http://www.bioinformatics.iastate.edu/CSBSI/ . Questions? Applicants should contact: Mary Jane McCunn, 112 Office and Laboratory Building, Baker Center for Bioinformatics and Biological Statistics, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011-3020; Phone: 1-515-294-7278; Email: mjmccunn@iastate.edu.

The Summer Institute has two parts:

1) a 2-week Short Course in Computational and Systems Biology (June 8 to 20, 2008)

Short Course in Computational and Systems Biology, June 8 - June 20, 2008 -- This intensive instructional course will review fundamental methods in computational and systems biology, describe applications to prominent research problems, and discuss recent accomplishments in genomics, genome informatics and systems biology. The course will consist of lectures by internationally renowned faculty, instruction in computer programming for bioinformatics, and computer laboratory sessions devoted to practical applications of the lecture materials. The Short Course will be attended by the CSBSI Fellows, and will have open enrollment for additional participants of all ranks from academia and industry on a fee basis until the course is full.

2) a 6-week Summer Internship (June 23 - August 1, 2008)

The CSBSI Fellows will work on individual research projects with ISU faculty and their groups. During this period, the students will also attend seminars by invited speakers and prepare their own final project presentations. Added sessions on professional development will include: "how to apply to a graduate school", "how to prepare a CV", bioethics, and other career considerations.

Patrick Schnable to speak at the Presidential Lecture, March 31 (3/30/08 ts)
BCB faculty member, Patrick Schnable, director of the Center for Plant Genomics, will speak Monday, March 31 in the Memorial Union Sun Room at 8 p.m. for the Presidential Lecture. He will explain the possible uses of the corn genome map and talk about other genomes and the future of genome research during this Spring 2008 Presidential University Lecture. A reception and display of student research precedes the lecture (7 p.m., MU South Ballroom). See: http://www.iastate.edu/Inside/2008/0314/schnable.shtml

March First Thursday Scheduled for March 13 (3/12/08 ts)
All BCB Graduate Students and IGERT and MGET Fellows are invited to our March First Thursday supper which will be held this Thursday, March 13, at 5:30 pm in 1102 Molecular Biology. We hope you will be able to join us as we review BCB program research efforts. Please let Trish know if you will be able to attend.

Presenters will include Jon Hurst, a First-Year BCB Student who will present: " Markov Model Selection and Parameterization Using A Genetic Algorithm" and Li Xue, a BCB student who works with Krishna Rajan in the Department of MSE. The title of her talk is: "PCA on microsphere of biodegradable polymer adjuvant data."

Please join us for this and other student presentations this Spring semester. A schedule can be found on the class website located at: http://www.bcb.iastate.edu/courses/BCB690-S2008.htm

BCB student presented at the New Mexico Bioinformatics Symposium (NMBIS), March 6-7, 2008 (3/6/08 ts)
Deekpak Reyon, a first-year graduate student in BCB, presented the BCB lab poster at the recent NMBIS conference. Several IGERT trainees -- Jon Hurst, Tonia Schwartz, Scott Boyken and Tim Goodmen -- attended, as did IGERT associates (BCB students) -- Stacy Duncan, John Van Hemert, Wengang Zhou, Olga Nikolova, and Deepak Reyon. The focus of this year's symposium was Next Generation Sequencing Technologies, Analysis, and Applications. Website: http://www.nminbre.org/pages/events/nmbis/2008/ .

Baker Seminar - April 3 - part of the BCB 593 Workshop for Spring 2008 (3/30/08 ts)
On Thursday, April 3, Dr. Craig Benham will present a seminar entitled, "DNA Structural Transitions and Transcriptional Regulation in E. Coli". View the seminar abstract here. The seminar is at 2:10 and will be held in 1652 Gilman Hall. Craig Benham is with the Department of Mathematics, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of California, Davis.

The seminar is hosted by the L.H. Baker Center for Bioinformatics and Biological Statistics and NSF-IGERT.
