CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FALL 2003 GRADUATES! (12-19-03)
Congratulations and very best wishes to our five students who will be awarded degrees at this evening's Graduate Commencement ceremony. We're proud of your accomplishments while at Iowa State--and we expect even greater things of you in future years!

    Kara Butterworth (IGERT, EEOB MS, Wendel/Adams)
    Kara began work last July as a laboratory assistant in the Department of Entomology at the University of California Riverside. Next August she plans to move to Arizona where she will pursue her high school teaching certificate.

    Aspen Garry (IGERT, EEB MS, Naylor/Adams)
    Aspen plans to return to Colorado, where she looks forward to enjoying time with her family while seeking employment and recuperating from the mad rush to the finish.

    Yingchun Wang (BCB and Genetics PhD, Chitnis/Kothari)
    Yingchun completed his degree work last August, and soon thereafter began work as a postdoctoral research associate at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA.

    Hua Zhou (BCB MS, Dorman/Carpenter)
    Hua also completed his degree work in August and immediately moved to California where he currently is enrolled as a PhD graduate student in the Statistics Department at Stanford University.

    Huaijun Zhou (BCB MS, Gu/Lamont)
    Huaijun, who has been enrolled as a concurrent degree student, was awarded his Animal Science PhD degree last Fall and in December 2002 accepted a research associate position in Dr. Lamont's Animal Science lab, where he will continue to work.

JO ETZEL'S HUSBAND TO IRAQ (12-17-03)
Jo Etzel's (BCB-IGERT, Dickerson lab) husband John Smith has been called for duty in Iraq. John is a member of the Army National Guard 194th Infantry Detachment out of Camp Dodge that was activated on December 15. After concluding preparations at Camp Dodge, the 194th is scheduled to leave for Texas on January 3 and depart for Iraq at a date to be announced. We send our best wishes with John for a safe and speedy return.

NEED A LITTLE ESCAPE DURING FINALS WEEK? (12-08-03)
Take a break from semester-end stress on Tuesday, December 16, 9 am - 3 pm, in the MBB second floor lounge. Calming music, soothing refreshments, and cuddly stuffed creatures will be available to comfort students, faculty and staff. All in need will be welcomed.

VOLKER BRENDEL WILL PRESENT THIS WEEK's BCB FACULTY SEMINAR (12-08-03)
Volker Brendel (Genetics, Development and Cell Biology), will present the BCB Faculty Seminar on Friday, December 12. All are welcome to attend the seminar, which will begin at 12:10 pm in E164 Lagomarcino.

DAN VOYTAS TO PRESENT BCB FACULTY SEMINAR (11-26-03)
Dan Voytas (Genetics, Development and Cell Biology), will present the BCB Faculty Seminar on Friday, December 5. Voytas' seminar, Transposable Elements in Genome Evolution will begin at 12:10 pm in E164 Lagomarcino and is open to the public.

DECEMBER FIRST THURSDAY SUPPER AND SOCIAL (11-26-03)
Our December First Thursday will be held 5:00-6:30 pm on December 4 in 1102 Molecular Biology. To help us plan, please let us know by noon Wednesday, December 3, whether you will be able to attend. We hope to see you there!
