Congratulations to Mgavi Braithwaite...(12/21/05 ts)
BCB Graduate Student, Mgavi Braithwaite, is a new dad !! Elombe came into the world on December 19th, weighing in at 8 lbs 4 ozs. He is 21" long. Mother and son, and dad, are doing well !!!! What a wonderful gift to receive during this Holiday season. Congratulations, Mgavi !!!!

MGET Mini Grant Applications Due December 15 (11/18/05 kmw)
Attention, MGET Fellows! Don't forget, the deadline for submitting your MGET Mini Grant application for Spring 2006 is 5pm Thursday, December 15. Just complete the application and submit it by the deadline; note that grants are available for Spring 2006 or Summer 2006. Funds must be expended by August 15, 2006.

Congratulations on Receipt of Supercomputer Grant (12/14/05 ts)
BCB Faculty, Srinivas Aluru, ECpE; Pat Schnable, Center for Plant Genomics; and Robert Jernigan, Baker Center for Bioinformatics and Biological Statistics, were awarded $600,000 from NSF for Acquisition of a 512-Node Supercomputer for Large-Scale Applications in Genomics and Systems Biology.

Congratulations to Graduating BCB'ers (12/14/05 ts)
Changhui Yan and Pan Du are graduating this term. Congratulations to both !!

Changhui Yan is a Ph.D. Co-Major in BCB and Computer Science. His Major Professors are Vasant Honavar from Computer Science and Drena Dobbs from GDCB. He has accepted an assistant professor position in the Computer Science Department at Utah State University.

Pan Du is a Ph.D. Co-Major in BCB and Electrical Engineering. His Major Professors are Julie Dickerson from ECPRE and Eve Wurtele from GDCB. He has accepted a Research Associate / Senior Bioinformatics Analyst position with the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University, Chicago, IL

MGET Fellowship Awards Announced (12/13/05 kmw)
MGET director Chris Tuggle today announced the results of the MGET Fellowship Award competition. Winners include BCB majors Michael Lawrence (Stat, Cook/Wurtele), Michael Sparks (GDCB, Brendel/Wendel) and Michael Terribilini (GDCB, Dobbs/Honavar), and EEB major Erin Myers (EEOB, Janzen/Adams).

The MGET Fellowship Awards provide a six-month stipend of $11,500 beginning January 1, 2006. They also include full tuition (half paid by MGET, half by the Graduate College) and cover all standard fees for Spring 2006.

New Baby Jones (12/13/05 kmw)
Congratulations to MGET fellow Erin Boote Jones (ChemE, Mallapragada) and husband Joel on the birth of daughter Aria Elizabeth Jones on December 7. Baby Aria weighed in at 8 pounds 4 ounces, measured 21 inches long and, according to her proud papa, is a "beautiful baby girl." Our best wishes to Erin, Joel, Aria and big brother Bennett!

Maize genome assembly is selected for best paper award at IPDPS (12/12/05 ts)
Srinivas Aluru, Scott Emrich, BCB Faculty and Graduate Student, and Anantharaman Kalyanaraman, ECpE; Patrick Schnable, Center for Plant Genomics, had their paper entitled "Assembling Genomes on Large-Scale Parallel Computers" selected as one of the four best papers for the IEEE International Parallel & Distributed Processing Symposium 2006, scheduled to take place April 25 – 29, 2006, in Rhodes Island, Greece.

This recognition is especially noteworthy, as submissions numbered 531, a record that exceeds the previous record (in 2003) by almost 100 and the average of recent years by close to 200. The paper will be scheduled in a 30-minute slot at the plenary session dedicated to the four best papers. http://www.ipdps.org
