POSTPONED - First Pioneers in the Biological Sciences Seminar (2/22/07 kmw)
Due to sickness, Dr. Judith Kimble's visit has been postponed until a later date to be announced. Neither the networking event nor the seminar will be held on February 22 as previously scheduled.

BCB Campus Visits this Week (2/20/07 kmw)
We'd like to invite all BCB, IGERT and MGET students to help meet and greet the seven prospective BCB students who will be visiting campus this Thursday and Friday:

Thursday Supper, 5:30pm, February 22, 1102 Molecular Biology
Friday Dinner Party, 6pm February 23, BCB student Preeti Bais' home, 4313 Harrison Circle

Please let Trish know if you can attend either or both of these events. We hope you will!

We appreciate all you do to help our guests feel welcome and make their visit great! Thank you!

First Pioneers in the Biological Sciences Seminar February 22 (2/15/07 kmw)
University of Wisconsin biochemistry professor Judith Kimble will present the first in the Pioneers in the Biological Sciences: A Seminar Series for Outstanding Women Scientists and Role Models on February 22. Kimble, who also serves as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, will speak on Controls of germline stem cells in C. elegans at 4:10 pm in 1414 Molecular Biology. All - the outstanding men among us, as well as the outstanding women! - are encouraged to attend.

Dr. Kimble also will participate in a discussion and networking event sponsored by ISU's ADVANCE office at 1-2 p.m. February 22 in the Memorial Union Gallery. Topics will include mentoring and strategies for career success. For more information on the networking event, contact the ADVANCE office at 294-6151.

February"First Thursday" Moves to FRIDAY, February 9 (2/6/07 kmw)
This month's First Thursday is moving to Friday, February 9. This rescheduling will make it possible for students to meet with Kyle Roberts, a prospective BCB graduate student who will be arriving on Friday for a campus visit. We hope you will be able to join our group in welcoming Kyle this Friday evening at 5:30 in 1102 Molecular Biology. Please let Trish know whether you can come for supper and conversation. Hope to see you there!

Spring Thesis Seminars Scheduled (1/31/07 kmw)
The Graduate Thesis Office has announced three Thesis Seminar sessions for students planning to submit a thesis this spring. Interested support staff and faculty also are welcome to attend.

Friday, February 16, 1:00-2:00pm, 1106 Pearson Hall
Thursday, February 22, 11:30am-12:30pm, 2106 Pearson Hall
Tuesday, February 27, 11:30am-12:30pm, 1105 Pearson Hall
According to the Thesis Office, "the seminar will cover ETD thesis preparation procedures, requirements, and recommendations, as well as the methods required for submitting on-line with the fewest problems. The Thesis Requirements website will have updated links and information for spring semester by February 17." Additional sessions are planned for later this semester and also for next summer.

Space is limited, so please sign up by e-mailing Linda Thorson to reserve a place.

February"First Thursday" to be Held February 8 (1/31/07 kmw)
It turns out that many first-year students have a major exam on Friday, February 2, so we're postponing this month's First Thursday until the second Thursday, February 8. The event will be a lot more fun if we're not hyperventilating, right? If you can join us for First Thursday on the eighth, please let Trish know so she can plan the food. Hope to see you there! (And good luck on that exam!)

Joe Song to present February 1 Baker Center Seminar (1/26/07 kmw)
Dr. Joe Song from New Mexico State University's Department of Computer Science will present A discrete dynamic system model for gene interaction in response to bioethanol conversion inhibitor HMF for ethanologenic yeast at 2:10pm Thursday, February 1, in the Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium in Howe Hall. All are invited to the seminar, which is part of the Baker Center Seminar Series.

New Mexico State University is our IGERT project partner, and some of you will remember Dr. Song from last summer's Joint Bioinformatics Symposium as well as from last Fall's Systems Biology class. Following Thursday's seminar, students will have an opportunity to meet Dr. Song at a special student reception in room 20 Howe Hall. Stop by to say hello!
