IOWA STATE UNIVERSTIY/UNIVERSITY OF IOWA JOINT BIOINFORMATICS WORKSHOP (7-28-04 tef)
The Iowa State University/University of Iowa Joint Bioinformatics Workshop will be held on Friday, August 6, 2004 in the Molecular Biology Building. You may register and obtain further information at the "Bioinformatics Workshop Homepage".
ORIENTATION-FALL 2004 (7-28-04 tef)
Fall orientation will begin on Monday, August 16. Attendence is required for all events. For the tentative schedule, you may either follow the link on the main BCB webpage titled, "Orientation Schedule-Fall 2004"or you may click the link provided.
BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT (7-27-04) BCB alumna Xiang Gao and husband
Qunfeng Dong became parents on Tuesday, July 20, with the arrival of
daughter Amy. Xiang is a postdoctoral research associate in Dan Voytas'
lab and Qunfeng is an assistant scientist with Volker Brendel's
group. Congratulations and best wishes to Xiang and Qunfeng. Welcome, Amy!
THESIS SEMINAR Friday, July 9th (7-7-04 tef)
BCB student Tyra Dunn will present her MS thesis seminar,"Genomic differences
between humans and primates," at 1:00 p.m. in 333 Science II. Individuals from the ISU bioinformatics community are invited to attend.

BCB student Junli Ji will present her MS thesis seminar,"Free radicals: Potential candidates for development of sudden death syndrome in soybean," from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in 3140 Agronomy Hall. The ISU bioinformatics community is invited to attend.

LAB SAFETY ORIENTATION (6-22-04 tef)
If you have yet to participate in the Lab Safety Orientation, dates and times have been announced for the end of August. Completing this orientation is required for every BCB student. You may sign up at the Environmental Health and Safety website. This six–hour session introduces new students to basic safety and regulatory issues related to work activities conducted in a chemical laboratory. Topics covered include:
· OSHA Laboratory Standard/ ISU Chemical Hygiene Plan
· Personal Protective Equipment
· Hazardous Waste in the Laboratory: Five Critical Factors
· Radiation Safety: What Non-Radiation Laboratory Employees Need to Know
· Fire Extinguisher Training
Tuesday, August 17, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, August 18, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Thursday, August 19, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
There will be a one-hour break for lunch (meal not included).
Students may self-register for this session at the Environmental Health and Safety website by first creating a client profile.
This session meets the core required courses for new students working in laboratories. Students must register for the entire session to receive credit. Partial credit for individual safety topics is not permitted.
