ISU Students Made Strong Showing at a Top Bioinformatics Conference (7-27-05 ts update)
Vasant Honavar reported that ISU's Bioinformatics and Computational Biology program made a strong showing in the 2005 Intelligent Systems in Molecular Biology (ISMB) Conference held in Detroit, June 25-29. The conference program included 2 oral presentations (44 posters were selected from over 600 submissions for oral presentations), a 50-minute software demonstration, and 9 poster presentations.

Oral presentations by ISU faculty and students at the conference included: "Genome-wide comparative analysis of alternative splicing in plants" , Bing-Bing Wang and Volker Brendel and "A computational method to identify amino acid residues involved in protein-DNA interactions", Changhui Yan, Michael Terribilini, Feihong Wu, Robert Jernigan, Drena Dobbs and Vasant Honavar.

ISMB is one of the world's largest bioinformatics conferences and provides a forum for disseminating the latest developments in bioinformatics. The multi-disciplinary conference brought together scientists from molecular biology, medicine, computer science, mathematics and statistics. The scope of ISMB encompasses the development and application of advanced computational methods for biological problems at the levels of sequences, cells, organs, and organisms.
