Register NOW for the Joint Bioinformatics Symposium (6/15/06 kmw)
All students and faculty interested in presenting posters or talks at the June 13-14 Annual Joint Bioinformatics Symposium need to register and submit abstracts by this Friday, June 16.

Students, please note that a BCB 593 Workshop will be offered in conjunction with this symposium: 1 credit hour, reference number 7397005. BCB 593 students are required to register for the symposium, submit an abstract and present a poster.

This year's symposium will focus on "Systems Biology" and run from 5:30 pm Thursday, July 13 to 5:30 pm Friday, July 14.

Update on Julie Callon (6/15/06 kmw)
We just received a note from former BCB graduate administrative assistant Julie Callon (now Julie Siegert), letting us know she received her Master of Arts degree in counseling phychology from Bethel University in St. Paul, MN, on May 27. Congratulations, Julie! We wish you all the best (and we still miss you)!

Register for the Summer Offering of BCB 593 (5/30/06 ts)
BCB 593 Workshop in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology will be offered this summer in conjunction with our Annual Joint Bioinformatics Symposium, July 13-14. The instructor for this one-credit course will be Dan Voytas. The topic will be Systems Biology. To register use Reference number: 7397005.

Class participants must register and attend the symposium. Registration deadline is June 30. The symposium consists of a series of talks presented by the following outside speakers, as well as by students and faculty from the three host institutions (Iowa State, U of Iowa and New Mexico State U):

  • Dr. Christina Grozinger, Department of Entomology, W.M. Keck Center for Behavioral Biology, North Carolina State University
    Neurogenomics of honey bee behavior
  • Dr. Heng Zhu, Department of Pharmacology, High Throughput (HiT) Biology Center, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
    Applications of protein chips
  • Dr. Anuj Kumar, Department of MCD Biology, Life Sciences Institute, The University of Michigan
    Integrated Genomic Analysis of Filamentous Growth in Yeast
  • Dr. Vladimir Filkov, Department of Computer Science, University of California, Davis
    Computational modeling and reverse engineering of genetic networks

In addition to attending the symposium sessions, students will be required to a) read background papers by the speakers, b) attend two pre-symposium class meetings with one hour of discussion devoted to each speaker (2-4pm on July 11 and July 13) and c) submit an abstract and present a poster at the symposium.
