Special Baker Seminar to be Held June 28 (6/19/07 kmw)
Dr. Simon Frost, Department of Pathology, Division of Comparative Pathology and Antiviral Research Center, University of California, San Diego, will present a seminar hosted by the L.H. Baker Center for Bioinformatics and Biological Statistics and the NIH-NSF CSBSI Summer Institute in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology on Thursday, June 28. Dr. Frost's seminar, titled Evolution of immune escape in HIV-1, will be begin at 1:10 pm in 1104 Gilman Hall. All are invited to attend.
Dr. Frost also will be available to meet with students and faculty on Thursday, June 28. If you would like to arrange a meeting, please let Mary Jane McCunn know what times you can be available.
MS Word and LaTeX Thesis Classes Offered This Summer
(6/14/07 kmw)
The Graduate College has announced the following thesis software sessions for students planning to graduate this summer or early next fall:
Writing a Thesis with LaTeX
This hands-on course covers a brief introduction to the isuthesis document package used to produce a thesis or dissertation with LaTeX. Participants use their own Network-ID and put together a short thesis or dissertation during the workshop. Before taking this course, the Introduction to LaTeX short course is highly recommended.
June 15, 2:10-3:30pm, Room 89 Durham Center
Word: Creating a Thesis with Word
This hands-on course will demonstrate techniques required to write theses and dissertations with Microsoft Word. Topics include the use of styles and headings to maintain consistency in the document and easily create a table of contents. Tricks for inserting big tables and graphics will be demonstrated. Participants use their own Network-ID in the workshop and will put together the framework for a thesis or dissertation during the session; both Windows and Macintosh computers will be available. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word for either Windows or Macintosh.
June 20, 1:00-3:00pm, Room 89 Durham Center
Classes are free for ISU students; online registration is available. The Graduate College advises "After these sections fill up, ask to be put on a waiting list (or go to the class to see if you can replace a person who doesn’t show up for the class) or ask them to offer more sections."
Two notes: IT Services has made the LaTeX courses and the major sections of the MS Word course available as web videos online. These courses will be repeated in Fall and Spring.
Jie Li's Thesis Seminar June 14 (6/13/07 kmw)
BCB student Jie Li (Genetics, Development and Cell Biology department; co-major professors Drs. Eve Wurtele and Leslie Miller) will present his PhD thesis seminar Data integration for biological network databases: MetNetDB labeled graph model and graph matching algorithm at 10am Thursday, June 14 in 240 Bessey Hall. All are invited to attend.
BCB Lab Meeting June 5 (6/5/07 kmw)
Have you heard? BCB students have created the BCB Lab, a student-run laboratory designed to provide computational solutions, i.e. bioinformatics expertise and service, to the university community at large. The BCB Lab helps link biological researchers with students who can bring bioinformatics tools and practices to bear on the biologists’ work. In the process, students get real-life, hands-on experience in solving bioinformatics-related problems while developing their bioinformatics skills and analytical techniques. It's a definite win-win situation for everyone!
The BCB Lab holds semimonthly meetings to discuss lab projects and issues, and is always looking for enthusiastic participants...like YOU! Check it out at 5:15 Tuesday, June 5, in 2034 Molecular Biology. A light supper will be served.
Upcoming Thesis Seminars (6/4/07 kmw)
BCB students and IGERT trainees Scott Emrich (Electrical Engineering Department, co-major professors Drs. Srinivas Aluru and Patrick Schnable) and Tyra Dunn-Thomas (Biomedical Science Department, co-major professors Drs. Heather Greenlee and Vasant Honavar) and will present their PhD thesis seminars on June 8 and June 12 respectively.
Scott's seminar, Assembly and analysis of complex plant genomes will be presented at 9am Friday, June 8, in 353 Durham Center. Tyra will present her seminar Characterizing and influencing differentiation of retinal progenitor cells at 1pm Tuesday, June 12, in Room 2010, College of Veterninary Medicine. Everyone in ISU's bioinformatics and computational biology community is invited to attend these seminars.
First Thursday Scheduled for June 7 (6/4/07 kmw)
Our June First Thursday will begin at 5pm June 7 in 1102 Molecular Biology. Special guests will be visiting students who are participating in the Computational and Systems Biology Summer Institute (CSBSI). Please come and help welcome our guests- AND enjoy fine food and conversation!
Let Trish know if you will be able to attend. We hope to see you there!
BCB Chair Named Computerworld Laureate (6/4/07 kmw)
Dr. Srinivas Aluru, BCB program chair and faculty member and professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named Computerworld Laureate for innovative use of information technology for the benefit of society, in the category "Environment, Energy and Agriculture." The award recognizes Dr. Aluru's efforts in leading a team of computer scientists, bioinformaticists and plant biologists in developing high performance methods to assemble and analyze complex plant genomes on thousands of processors. BCB faculty member Dr. Patrick Schnable partnered with Dr. Aluru in leading the project, and BCB/IGERT student Scott Emrich's contributions were instrumental in carrying out the interdisciplinary effort and in bridging the computer scientists and biologists to make a cohesive team. Dr. Aluru, along with Dr. Schnable, will accept this award at the 19th Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony and Gala Awards Evening being held in Washington, D.C. today. See all the details in the ISU press release.
Huge CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Aluru, Dr. Schnable and (soon to be Dr.) Scott Emrich for this prestigious recognition of a job well done!
