Computational and Systems Biology Institute (CSBSI) Announced - June 8 - August 1, 2008 (2/6/08 ts)
Computational and Systems Biology Summer Institute (CSBSI) at Iowa State University is jointly supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The purpose of this program is to provide undergraduate and graduate students majoring in sciences and engineering with an introduction to integrated biology and Systems Biology. No prior experience in these fields is required.

The ISU-CSBSI will award up to 12 studentships to CSBSI Fellows. To guarantee consideration, applications must be received by March 15, 2008.

Each studentship will cover a $4,000 stipend over the entire 8 weeks as well as costs of travel and living. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Undergraduate students must have completed their sophomore year and graduate students must be within the first two year of entry into their graduate education program.

Complete information, applications and brochures on this opportunity can be found here: http://www.bioinformatics.iastate.edu/CSBSI/ . Questions? Applicants should contact: Mary Jane McCunn, 112 Office and Laboratory Building, Baker Center for Bioinformatics and Biological Statistics, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011-3020; Phone: 1-515-294-7278; Email: mjmccunn@iastate.edu.

The Summer Institute has two parts:

1) a 2-week Short Course in Computational and Systems Biology (June 8 to 20, 2008)

Short Course in Computational and Systems Biology, June 8 - June 20, 2008 -- This intensive instructional course will review fundamental methods in computational and systems biology, describe applications to prominent research problems, and discuss recent accomplishments in genomics, genome informatics and systems biology. The course will consist of lectures by internationally renowned faculty, instruction in computer programming for bioinformatics, and computer laboratory sessions devoted to practical applications of the lecture materials. The Short Course will be attended by the CSBSI Fellows, and will have open enrollment for additional participants of all ranks from academia and industry on a fee basis until the course is full.

2) a 6-week Summer Internship (June 23 - August 1, 2008)

The CSBSI Fellows will work on individual research projects with ISU faculty and their groups. During this period, the students will also attend seminars by invited speakers and prepare their own final project presentations. Added sessions on professional development will include: "how to apply to a graduate school", "how to prepare a CV", bioethics, and other career considerations.

New Mexico Bioinformatics Symposium (NMBIS), March 6-7, 2008 (2/6/08 ts)
IGERT participants and associates (BCB students) are encouraged to attend the NMBIS conference to be held in Santa Fe, New Mexico. IGERT and BCB funding may be available to offset some of the costs for students who attend this conference. The focus of this year's symposium is Next Generation Sequencing Technologies, Analysis, and Applications. Website: http://www.nminbre.org/pages/events/nmbis/2008/ . The cost to attend is $75.00 for students, and registration is free for those students who submit posters. Be sure to apply for PAG funding as well. See PAG Travel application news directly below.

Changes in PAG Travel Application Process (2/6/08 ts)
As of January 1, the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) has made a few changes to the Professional Advancement Grant (PAG) program that you should be aware of:

    • A new PAG application form can be found here . GPSS is responsible for the application form, guidelines and the contents of their website.
    • An application checklist has been added to the application form to help students successfully complete their application.  The GPSS Executive Board has made the decision to only allow students one chance to submit a complete application.  Those applications that are denied will not be accepted for resubmission to the same conference.
    • As of January 1, 2008, GPSS will fund presenters with $50 each day for up to 4 days for maximum support of $200; non-presenters receive $30 each day for up to 4 days for maximum support of $120.  The Graduate College portion will remain the same: $50 for non-presenters and $100 for presenters.
    • Reminder:  Students must be registered for classes during the term they are traveling before applications will be approved and returned.
    • Apply as soon as possible as funds sometimes can be exhausted for a particular semester.
    • If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact: Alissa Stoehr Executive Board Member Professional Advancement Chair gpsspag@iastate.edu.
