IGERT Thesis Seminar (11/15/06 kmw)
IGERT trainee Tony Hill (Chemical Engineering; major professors Peter Reilly and Zhijun Wu) will present his PhD thesis seminar Computational methods in the study of carbohydrates and carbohydrate-active enzymes at 2:00pm Friday, November 17, in 1160 Sweeney. The ISU computational molecular biology community is invited to attend

November 17 BCB Faculty Seminar to be Presented by Dr. Tuggle (11/14/06 kmw)
Chris Tuggle (Animal Science), will present Functional genomics in the pig at 2:10pm Friday, November 17, in W0142 Lagomarcino. This presentation is part of the BCB Faculty Seminar series, which is open to the university computational biology community.

November 16 Baker Center Seminar Focuses on Microarrays (11/9/06 kmw)
Dr. Catherine Ball, Department of Biochemistry, Stanford University, will present Stanford Microarray Database: An open-source software project and a resource for ongoing microarray research at 2:10pm Thursday, November 16, in the Allaint Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium in Howe Hall. This is the second in this year's Baker Center Seminar Series. The ISU bioinformatics community is invited to attend.

A reception for BCB and IGERT students to meet the speaker will be held in 1234 Howe Hall immediately following the seminar.

Dr. Mallapragada to Present this Week's BCB Faculty Seminar (11/6/06 kmw)
Surya Mallapragada (Chemical and Biological Engineering), will present Micropatterned polymer substrates for peripheral nerve regeneration and control of neural stem cell growth and differentiation at the BCB Faculty Seminar on Friday, November 10. The seminar, which will begin at 2 pm in W0142 Lagomarcino, is open to the public.

Presentation on Bioinformatics Resources November 7 (11/6/06 kmw)
Andrea Dinkelman, Assistant Professor and Science & Technology Librarian at the Parks Library, will present a special session for BCB, IGERT and MGET students on bioinformatics literature resources available at the Parks Library. The presentation is scheduled for 5:15pm Tuesday, November 7, in 1102 Molecular Biology. Please let Trish know if you can attend, as space is limited.

November "First Thursday" to be held November 9 (11/3/06 kmw)
This month's First Thursday will be held on the second Thursday, November 9. We are planning a special Thanksgiving Feast of turkey (with tofurky alternative for the vegetarians among us!), dressing, potatoes and gravy, cranberry relish, salads and (ta-da!) pumpkin pie! Students are welcome to bring a side dish to share. Our feast will begin at 5:30pm (note the time change!) in 1210 Molecular Biology. Please let Trish know if you plan to attend (we hope you will!).

Baker Center Seminars Begin November 2 (10/27/06 kmw)
The first seminar of this year's Baker Center Seminar Series will be held 2:10 pm Thursday, November 2, in the Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium in Howe Hall. Dr. Peter Clote, a member of Boston College's Department of Biology and Department of Computer Science, will present the seminar titled Some new aspects of protein and RNA structure. The ISU bioinformatics community is invited to attend.

A reception for BCB and IGERT students to meet the speaker will be held in 1234 Howe Hall immediately following the seminar.

Reminder: ABCs of Grading Workshop to be Held November 2 (10/26/06 kmw)
Don't forget to attend the CELT workshop, "ABC’s of Grading," on Thursday, November 2, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in 1115 Pearson. This workshop, designed specifically for graduate students and TAs, "offers ideas for fast, fair, and effective grading. Participants will discuss issues such as how much to grade, how to deal with collaborative work, how to increase feedback, how to arrange grading workloads, and ways to deal with student grade complaints." Pizza will be provided.
