NO BCB FACULTY SEMINAR THIS WEEK (10-28-03)
In order to allow the ISU computational biology community to attend the International Symposium on Modern Computing, there will be no BCB Faculty Seminar this week.

FALL 2003 PRESIDENTIAL UNIVERSITY LECTURE ANNOUNCED (10-27-03)
Dr. Max Rothschild, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture, will present the Fall 2003 Presidential University Lecture, From a Sow's Ear to a Silk Purse: The Promise of Genomics, at 8 pm Thursday, November 13, in the Memorial Union Sun Room. A reception and student poster display will precede the lecture at 7 pm in the South Ballroom.
OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH BIOINFORMATICS PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENTIST (10-22-03)
This just in from Karin Dorman: "Tomorrow [Thursday, October 23] in Snedecor 104 from 10-11:30, Hongyue Dai of Rosetta Inpharmatics will be available to visit with students. Formally, he is scheduled to meet with BCB students 10:00-10:45, but students may come at any time during the 1.5 hours." Don't miss this great opportunity to hear about pharmaceutical career possibilities. Also, plan to attend Dai's seminar on Thursday afternoon.
HAVE YOU CHECKED OUR JOB POSTINGS RECENTLY? (10-21-03)
Yesterday we received a job announcement from Dr. Mary Lee S. Ledbetter, Professor of Biology at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, regarding a Teaching Postdoctoral Fellowship in Bioinformatics. The position, funded by Dr. Ledbetter's recent NSF Director's award as a Distinguished Teaching Scholar, is a two-year appointment "during which time the fellow will conduct collaborative research with me and our undergraduate research students while teaching a half-time load in the Biology Department under my mentorship." What a tremendous opportunity for those of you interested in college-level teaching! PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENTIST TALKS ON MICROARRAYS (10-21-03)
On Thursday, October 23, the Statistics Department will host Hongyue Dai of Rosetta Inpharmatics (subsidiary of Merck). Dai's seminar, "Gene Expression Profiling Predicts Clinical Outcomes of Breast Cancer," will be presented at 4:15 pm in 1810 Gilman Hall. Karin Dorman, who is hosting Dai's visit, is working to arrange a time for interested BCB-IGERT-MGET students to meet with Dai for "an industry perspective on the types of things they can do after graduation." Details of this student session will be posted as soon as they become available.
XUEYUE SONG WILL PRESENT THIS WEEK'S BCB FACULTY SEMINAR (10-20-03)
Xueyue Song (Chemistry), will present this week's BCB Faculty Seminar on Friday, October 24. The seminar, entitled "Protein Crystallization and Protein-Protein Interactions," will begin at 12:10 pm in 1104 Gilman. Please note the room change, for this week only. As always, these seminars are open to the public.
ALEX TRAVESSET WILL SPEAK AT THIS WEEK'S BCB FACULTY SEMINAR (10-16-03)
Alex Travesset (Physics), will present Soft Condensed Matter: from Physics to Computational Biology and Back at the BCB Faculty Seminar on Friday, October 17. The seminar, which will begin at 12:10 pm in E164 Lagomarcino, is open to the public.
UPDATE ON INTERNATIONAL COMPUTING SYMPOSIUM (10-16-03)
GREAT NEWS! Students now have the option of attending the talks at the October 30-November 1 International Computing Symposium at no charge! Simply go to the registration page and select "Full-time Student without Meal Package and Proceedings." You can, of course, still register for the meal package and proceedings if you wish to do so for the $60 registration fee. A preliminary schedule for the Symposium is now available online.
ECHOES OF WEDDING BELLS (10-14-03)
We extend our belated congratulations to BCB PhD student Jae-Hyung Lee (Dobbs/Ho) on his recent marriage. Jae-Hyung and Suh-Yeon Choi were wed on May 29 during Jae-Hyung's visit to his home in Seoul, Korea. Suh-Yeon returned with Jae-Hyung to Iowa State, and is enrolled in the Interdepartmental Genetics program. Congratulations and very best wishes to both Jae-Hyung and Suh-Yeon!

BROWN v. BOARD OF EDUCATION ESSAY CONTEST AND CELEBRATION (10-13-03)
The following announcement was received today. The contest is open to students, staff and faculty. Cash prizes of $250 and up will be awarded.
Iowa State University is hosting a year long celebration to honor a very important landmark decision in the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education. All are invited to participate in this event including Iowa State members along with the entire Ames Community. Also, an essay contest will accompany our year long celebration of this very important legal victory!
Below are details to enter the Brown v. Board of Education Essay Contest.
Description: Essay should be roughly about 1000 words or four pages double spaced. The theme needs to entail the importance of the Brown v. Board of Education decision with specific facts that transpired making this case an important legal victory. Also, a brief statement regarding how the institution of education has been influenced by the Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954 and its impact on your life and/or the lives of those you know. This activity is in support of President Geoffroy’s year long celebration an observance of the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision.
Deadline: December 15th 2003. Award winners will be recognized at the annual NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet held in Ames, Iowa on February 13, 2004. All winners will be notified and offered free admission to the banquet.

TAKE A BREAK! (10-8-03)
Fall Gala 2003, sponsored by the Government of the Student Body, Student Alumni Leadership Council, and the Dean of Students Office will be held Saturday, October 18, 9pm-12:30am in Memorial Union Great Hall. Music will be provided by Dr. Feelgood, playing swing, salsa, waltz. Valet parking (at MU fountain entrance), dance lessons and refreshments will be available. Tickets ($10 single, $18 couple) can be purchased in the student government office in Memorial Union.

Awards will be for $70,000 per year for three years. The grant will fund researchers at the post-fellowship, assistant professor level who have demonstrated a commitment to bleeding disorders research.
JUDITH GRAHAM POOL POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
Application Deadline December 1, 2003
Four new, two-year research fellowships of $42,000 per year will be awarded to individuals who have recently completed doctoral training.

ANOTHER BCB GRADUATE MOVES UP AND OUT (10-3-03)
We extend our congratulations to Nicole Leahy (BCB PhD, Ashlock/Mayfield), who successfully defended her thesis on September 26. Nicole has already packed up and made the move to Athens, GA, where she will begin her postdoctoral research position with Dr. Marjorie Asmussen in the Department of Genetics at the University of Georgia on October 6. Congratulations, Nicole!
