BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT (9-30-03)
We extend our congratulations to BCB faculty member Amy Andreotti and husband Alejandro (Curriculum and Instruction faculty member) on the birth of their daughter Isabel on September 29 (also Amy's birthday!). Our best wishes to Amy, Alejandro, Isabel and five-year old big brother Daniel.

ALUMNI UPDATE (9-30-03)
BCB's first PhD alumna Yufeng Wang (Summer 2001, Gu/Ashlock) recently accepted a tenure-track assistant professorship in biology at the University of Texas, San Antonio. She previously had been an independent research scientist with American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) in Manassas, VA. Congratulations, Yufeng!

IGERT alumnus Sid Baccam (Applied Mathematics and Immunobiology PhD, Spring 2000, Cornette/Carpenter) has completed his postdoctoral appointment at Los Alamos National Laboratory and started his new position with Innovative Emergency Management, Inc. (IEM) in Abingdon, MD. IEM is a risk management company providing services to both private industry and government agencies. Sid, his wife Becky and son Isaac arrived in Maryland just in time to enjoy the hurricane's electrical outages. Now that power finally has been restored, Sid has been busy getting reacquinted with his computer. Watch for Sid's latest publication in the November issue of Journal of Virology. Nice going, Sid!

STATISTICS SEMINAR SEPTEMBER 29 (9-24-03)
The Statistical Laboratory at ISU is hosting a seminar by Juergen Kleffe (Charité-University Medicine, Campus Benjamin Franklin, Institute of Molecularbiology and Biochemistry, Section: Molecularbiology and Bioinformatics, Berlin, Germany) at 4:10 pm Monday, September 29, in 1104 Gilman. SRINIVAS ALURU WILL PRESENT SEPTEMBER 26 BCB FACULTY SEMINAR (9-23-03; updated 9-24-03)
Srinivas Aluru, a faculty member in ISU's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, will present this Friday's BCB 691 Faculty Seminar. Aluru's seminar, A Faster Algorithm for Hierarchical Clustering of Microarray Data, will begin at 12:10 pm in E164 Lagomarcino. BCB GRADUATES ON TO NEW ADVENTURES! (9-23-03)
We extend our very special congratulations and best wishes to two BCB students who have recently completed their degree programs. Although they will not officially graduate until December 2003, they have wrapped up their work at ISU and moved on to new challenges.

BCB PhD student Nicole Leahy (GDCB Department, co-major professors John Mayfield and Dan Ashlock) will present her thesis seminar, Pseudophyte evolutionary algorithm: A simple computational model of parapatric speciations, at 1 pm Friday, September 26, in 0020 Howe Hall. The ISU bioinformatics community is invited to attend.

EVE WURTELE WILL PRESENT SEPTEMBER 19 BCB FACULTY SEMINAR (9-17-03)
Eve Wurtele, a faculty member in ISU's Genetic, Development and Cell Biology (GDCB)Department, will present the BCB 691 Faculty Seminar on Friday, September 19. The seminar, titled METNET: Integration of Metabolomic, Proteomic and Transcriptomic Gene Expression Data, will begin at 12:10 pm in E164 Lagomarcino. JEAN PECCOUD TO PRESENT THIS WEEK'S FACULTY SEMINAR (9-11-03)
Dr. Jean Peccoud of Pioneer Hi-Bred International, and a collaborating faculty member of the Genetics, Development and Cell Biology Department, will present the BCB 691 Faculty Seminar on Friday, September 12. ISU HOSTS INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON MODERN COMPUTING, OCTOBER 30 through NOVEMBER 1 (9-4-03)
"When professor John Vincent Atanasoff and graduate student Clifford Berry built the world's first electronic digital computer in the basement of the Iowa State University Physics building, little did they know they were changing the world of technology. To honor the late Atanasoff's 100th birthday next October, Iowa State University is hosting a landmark event to bring together leading experts to discuss what new computer technologies will have the potential to again change the world."

We strongly encourage students to participate in this international event. Registration for full-time students is $60, including meals and proceedings.
