CELT Workshop Series Announced (9/12/06 kmw)
Be sure to take advantage of this great series offered by the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT)!

The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching is planning a series of workshops this fall especially for graduate students.

The first workshop, "Going on the Academic Job Market," will be held Thursday, September 21, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in 1115 Pearson. Going on the academic job market is stressful work. This session, specifically for graduate students, will offer an overview on how to seek an academic job, especially how to write vitae and cover letters. Light meal available.

Graduate Student Teaching and Learning Circle: McKeachie’s Teaching Tips
McKeachie’s Teaching Tips has long been a valued resource for beginning and experienced teachers alike. This Circle, specifically for graduate students, will read and discuss portions of McKeachie’s text, which covers such topics as course preparation, discussion and lecture, grading and assessment, and more. Enrollment limited to 15.
*Sept. 28, Oct. 5, Oct. 12, & Oct. 19, Noon – 1:30 p.m. (Location announced after registration)

Graduste Student Programming: Preparing for Academic Interviews
This session, planned specifically for graduate students, will cover ways to prepare for academic interviews, including researching institutions, constructing questions and answers, and preparing for campus visits. Light meal available.
*Oct. 5, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., Room 1115 Pearson Hall

Graduate Student Programming: ABC’s of Grading
Geared specifically to graduate students and TAs, this session offers ideas for fast, fair, and effective grading. Participants will discuss issues such as how much to grade, how to deal with collaborative work, how to increase feedback, how to arrange grading workloads, and ways to deal with student grade complaints. Light meal available.
*Nov. 2, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., Room 1115 Pearson Hall

BCB/IGERT Thesis Seminar (9/7/06 kmw)
Shannon Schlueter (BCB major and IGERT trainee, Department of Genetics, Development and Biology; major professors Volker Brendel and Randy C. Shoemaker ) will present his PhD thesis seminar Plant genome informatics: evaluation and analysis of genomic DNA features involved in the transcriptional processing of protein coding genes at 10:15 am Thursday, September 14, in 1102 Molecular Biology. The ISU computational molecular biology community is invited to attend.
