Abstract
Since its introduction in the early 1980's by Kingman and Tajima, the theory of coalescents has been one of the major research areas in mathematical population genetics. In my talks, I will discuss some of its underlying ideas, which were presented by Kingman,in three papers, and by Felsenstein, in an earlier paper. If time permits, I will talk about some very recent extensions of the theory, from random mating populations to populations that reproduce partly by selfing.
