The Comparative Genomics Program at the Joint Genome Institute
|
Abstract
The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI), formed in 1997, has a state-of-the-art laboratory facility in Walnut Creek, CA, with extensive sequencing capabilities - currently about 500 million raw bases per month. Additionally, the Institute has access to the world's most powerful computers and a large staff of expert bioinformaticists and genome scientists. With the finishing of the human genome sequence upon us, much of this capacity will be directed toward comparative genomic sequencing. As part of this effort, the Laboratory of Comparative Genomics has recently been established at the JGI. Projects sponsored within this laboratory include global genome comparisons (e.g., inferring patterns of gene family diversification, identifying regulatory elements by comparison among and within suites of co-regulated genes/gene families, and distinguishing subsets of genes showing evidence of positive selection), phylogenetic inference through comparing genomic features (including, but not limited to, rearrangements in mitochondrial genomes), and targeted gene family evolution.

How to construct the integrated atlas of gene expression in situ
|
Abstract
This talk describes how to construct the integrated atlas of segmentation gene expression in situ from the images of gene expression patterns. These images were acquired by confocal scanning microscopy of fixed Drosophila embryos stained with fluorescence tagged antibodies.
Dr. Samsonova will also hold a full day training course on Tuesday March 27th. 9-12, 1:30-4:30 in MBB The participants of this course will work with 6 programs. If you are interested in attending the workshop, please email Eve Wurtele ASAP (mash@iastate.edu), as places are limited
Short Bio
Professor Samsonova received her Ph.D in Genetics from St.Petersburg State University. Untill 1996 she worked as the Associate Professor in the Biotechnological Centre, and the Head of Research Group in Computer Biology in the Department of Genetics of the St.Petersburg State University. Since 1996 Professor Samsonova has been Head of Laboratory of Bioinformation Systems in the Institute for High Performance Computing and Data Bases. In 1999 she was awarded with the SGI Outstanding Speaker Award at the ISMB'99 conference.
