The Bioinformatics and Computational Biology program invites applications from BCB Ph.D. students for the James Cornette Research Fellowships in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. These Fellowships usually provide $10,000 six-month research assistantships plus tuition, benefits, and fees. The award(s) are usually made in the fall and begin January 1 of the following year.

This Fellowship honors James Cornette, retired University Professor of Mathematics and founder of the BCB Graduate Program at Iowa State University. Dr. Cornette successfully brought biological and computational scientists together to create the BCB Graduate Program which is nationally recognized.

Awards - One or two Cornette Research Fellowships will be awarded this year. Additional awards may be made in future years.

Eligibility - Ph.D. students majoring in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology who have completed at least their first year of graduate training are eligible to apply. Each student is eligible for a maximum of two Cornette Research Fellowships during his or her graduate program. Students must have met their program timeline requirements for academic, course, and training requirements and other required activities. (These requirements will vary for students depending on their program and their year of graduate study.)

Criteria - The fellowships will be awarded to deserving students with strong records of research accomplishment or evidence of great potential.

A two-to-four page Research Proposal is the key component of the application and should describe the student’s doctoral research. Criteria for evaluation of the proposal includes the scientific merit of the proposal and evidence that the applicant has made good progress toward completion of dissertation research as documented in the proposal and in their publication record. In addition, the reviewers will look for a well-crafted proposal that demonstrates the students' ability to formulate hypotheses and design experiments to test them.

A requirement for receipt of a Cornette Fellowship is willingness to share winning proposals with other students to help future applicants learn successful grant writing skills. Copies of winning proposals will be available in the BCB program office, 2014 Molecular Biology, for review by future applicants.

To Apply - Graduate students should provide four copies of the following to the BCB Program Office:

The submission deadline for Fall 2007 Cornette Research Fellowship applications is November 19. Applications will be reviewed by a committee consisting of ISU bioinformatics faculty. Awards will be announced no later than December 7, with funding to begin January 1 of the following year.
