Multi-Disciplinary Graduate Education and Training (MGET) Program:
“Graduate Training in Computational Biology for Animal Agriculture”
Equipment Funding Opportunity
Guidelines
Note: Failure to follow these guidelines will result in rejection of your proposal.
Purpose
Funds for equipment to enhance graduate training in computational biology are available from the MGET-CBAA training grant. This Call for Proposals is intended to provide a mechanism to identify the best use of these funds for the MGET community. Funding for such equipment, as well as any innovative use of these funds that advances Computational Biology resources and opportunities at ISU, will be considered. Priority will be given to projects that are expected to benefit as many members of MGET as possible, as well as contribute to resources for Computational Biology on campus. Proposals with matching funds will also be given a higher priority. Of highest priority will be proposals that contribute to current needs and that also increase the chances for future external funding in the areas of animal and/or microbial genomics and Computational Biology. Thus it is expected that faculty members will be cognizant of the national priorities in these areas.
Eligibility
Any full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty member who is a member of the MGET training grant may apply. Collaborative applications are strongly encouraged and will receive high priority provided that one of the principal investigators involved meet the above-stated criteria. The roles of co-principal investigators must be clearly stated.
Use of Funds
Applications will be considered in the range of $5,000 to $20,000. Larger amounts will be considered (and potentially awarded) if the need for this level of funding is clear and the priority of the project is very high. The following categories are eligible for funding: computational equipment, software, or services to establish computational facilities, as well as other equipment that would support bioinformatics research on campus.
Content of Application (4 page maximum, including budget and cover page, excluding CV)
All requests must include the cover page form, a brief description of the need on campus for the equipment proposed, a description of the equipment to be acquired and the space available to be dedicated to the project/facility, the organizational structure for this equipment/material, including comments on access to the facility or service for the MGET and wider community, and a description of the long-term maintenance needs for the equipment and how the proposed equipment or materials maintenance will be funded (service contracts, etc.). A description of how the project will benefit and or enhance opportunities for external funding should also be stated. Budgetary details must be attached and each item should be briefly justified in terms of the proposed project/facility. Source of matching funds should be indicated.
The application should also include a brief curriculum vita (not to exceed 2 pages), for all Principal Investigators that includes research accomplishments and information on current and pending support.
Submission Procedures and Timetable for Award Announcement and Fund Availability
Completed applications are due on December 15, 2003. Awards will be announced on February 1, 2004. Funds will be made available to grantees February 1, 2004 through September 30, 2004.
