Pioneer Fellowship Recipient, Kent Vander Velden, says: A few years ago I was awarded a Pioneer fellowship along with two others. While initially I worried about the summer internship component being a distraction from my research, the experience was quite rewarding. Each internship is a little different with special attention being placed on properly pairing a student with a research scientist with similar interests. I would encourage a student to apply if he or she is interested.
James Cornette Research Fellowships in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology This Fellowship honors James Cornette, retired University Professor of Mathematics and founder of the BCB Graduate Program at Iowa State University. Dr. Cornette successfully brought biological and computational scientists together to create the BCB Graduate Program which is nationally recognized. The Cornette Fellowships provides a $10,000 six-month research assistantship plus tuition, fees and benefits. BCB graduate students are eligible to apply for this fellowship if they have completed their first year of PhD studies and if they have met program requirements for academic, course, training and other required activities within a specified timeframe. Applicants provide the fellowship selection committee with a proposal outlining their doctoral research. The Research Proposal included a project summary and a research plan which provided sufficient information to evaluate the project, independent of any other document, and which was provided in such a way that scientists outside of the student’s area of specialization could understand it. Criteria for evaluation of the proposal included the scientific merit of the proposal and evidence that applicant had made good progress toward completion of dissertation research as documented in the proposal and in their publication record. In addition, the reviewers looked for a well-crafted proposal that demonstrated the students’ ability to formulate hypotheses and design experiments to test them. Competition for the James Cornette Research Fellowship is intense, because typically only one applicant is chosen for the award of the fellowship from among the pool of applicants. With the high degree of selectivity exercised in admitting students to the BCB program, the applicants for the James Cornette Research Fellowship is bound to be extremely well-qualified. For the application process, see http://www.bcb.iastate.edu/students/Cornette_Fellowship.html. There is no competition in place at this time.
