Women in Science and Engineering 30th Anniversary
The Program for Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) was founded in 1986 by a group of ISU faculty and staff concerned about the underrepresentation and underutilization of women in science and engineering.
To kick off 30th Anniversary activities, Reshma Saujani has been invited to speak on January 28, 2016 at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. Saujani is the founder and CEO of Girls Who Code, a national nonprofit organization working to close the gender gap in technology and prepare young women for job of the future. Reshma is the author of Women Who Don’t Wait in Line, a groundbreaking book focused on embracing risk and failure, promoting mentorship, and boldly charting your own course, both personally and professionally.
BCB students have taken part in activities such as WISE for many years. Opportunities to interact with youngsters interested in science are invigorating ! Many BCB students have enjoyed the opportunities to share their passion for science through this program.
Marie Vendettuoli and Divita Mathur took part in some of these activities over their years in the BCB Program. Marie obtained her BCB PhD degree in the lab of BCB faculty member, Di Cook, who is in the Statistics Department. She now is a scientist at the USDA in Ames. Divita will graduate soon. She works in the lab of Eric Henderson, a BCB faculty member in the GDCB Department.
Sweta Vangaveti also took part in a number of activities with youngsters during her PhD career in the BCB program at Iowa State.
Her dissertation work focused on Coarsegraining and Electrostatics of phospholipid monolayers. Her mentors were Alex Travesett, BCB faculty member in the Physics and Astronomy Department and Robert Jernigan in the Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology (BBMB) Department.
She is now working as a Postdoctoral Associate at the RNA Institute, SUNY, Albany, NY.
Upcoming activities for current BCB students to share science with youngsters include:
a. February 6 th – Girl in Science @ Science Center of Des Moines
b. February 11th – Judging Des Moines Public School District's Science Fair @ Science Center
c. February 13 th – Science bound Saturday @ Iowa State University (MBB)
d. March 31st, April 1st – Judging the State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa @ Hilton Coliseum
e. April 7th, April 28th – Taking the Road Less Traveled @ ISU
